October 18, 2011
"BEING able to speak at l

October 18, 2011
“BEING able to speak at least one foreign language, work a PC and drive a car are three he passkeys to the 21st century.” More and more Chinese parents agree with this prevalent saying, and are starting to do something about it. They are starting to send their children to kindergartens where English classes are available. Sometimes this requires a considerable commute if the schools are far from their homes, but quite a few seem to believe it is worth it. Signs of this trend abound. English textbooks for young children are selling well in bookstores, university English majors are tutoring young children, and English classes are becomin kindergartens in Beijing and other large cities. Wang Xueyan teaching approach sets an example for kindergarten English teaching. A faculty member at a private school, Wang roves among several kindergartens in Beijing Chaoyang District because of the shortage of English teachers there. She teaches two or three times a week, with classes of at least half an hour. Wang has an English textbook compiled by the Chinese Publishing House, but she uses it only as a reference book, relying mainly on home-made “textbooks” consisting of colourful pictures of animals or different kinds of fruit. She gives children the Chinese words for the pictures and their pronunciation and spelling in English. Later she hands each child a picture and then asks questions aboutre is the dog? “the child who holds the sketch of a dog instantly raises the picture and answers” Here is the dog! “This way , the children learn the English words by heart. Wang explains that almost every word carries a certain meaning or concept. In most cases, it is difficult for children to comprehend abstract concepts, so she selects words that are easy to understand through images. Occasionally , she brings a prop to class – a model airplane, a plastic elephant or a Teddy bear, or perhaps an apple or a bunch of flowers. “Sometimes the pictures do not work,” Wang says. “The kids cannot tell the difference between a hen and a cock, for example. We have to explain in words. “Whenever she meets the children parents, she suggests that the children watcho and botanical garden or visit the countryside.” That will help the kids learn many different subjects, “she says. Wang lays special stress on children ability to speak, rather than on reading and writing. She believes writing and reading can only be taught in the higher grades of primary school. Otherwise, she says, children may become confused when they begin to learn the Chinese phonetic system in the early grades of primary school. But she says concentrating exclusively on speaking really does not make her task easier. “The kids can barely pronounce some consonants which do not exist in the Chinese language. I not yet satisfied with the outcome of my efforts. “She says she hopes pronunciation errors can be corrected in primary and junior high schould be careful not to push their children too hard. She notes that parents who speak English, including herself, often seize every chance to encourage their children to learn English no matter whether they are at home, out shopping, or visiting a zoo. However, Wang says parents should not force children to learn when they are not in the mood, or they may lose interest altogether. To make sure children stay interested in learning English, some kindergarten teachers are exploring new approaches. Liu Limei and Bi Xiaochun, who work in the English teaching section of a publishing house headquartered in Taiwan, teach at the experimental kindergarten of Beijing Normal University. They are helping children learn English through a variety of games. In one class, Liuthe children sit around her in a circle and puts an umbrella in the centre. She then gives each child a colourful picture of a boy or a girl and begins playing games. For instance, she may point to herself while she is saying “me” and then ask the children to follow her, pointing to themselves and saying “me” in unison. Later, she may hide behind the umbrella, asking, “Can you see me ? “During the whole class, Liu does not use a single Chinese word. English is taught through situational conversations. Spelling is not included in the syllabus. The two teachers also sing easy English songs or recite humorous rhymes.” We are trying to create a better climate for children to learn English. We hope we can make children think as native speakers do when they are using a set of progressive textbooks provided by their publishing house. The books feature American English because of its popularity among English learners in China. Liu and Bi tell parents what is taught in each class and offer special tapes to supplement children textbooks for additional practice at home. While more kindergartens have begun adding English classes, some parents are not satisfied with the teachers. Zhao Xiao, a tour guide who conducts tours in English, stresses the importance of pronunciation for beginners of a foreign language. He complains about the poor pronunciation of the English teachers in his son kindergarten. More fun in childhood Zhao said that since his son enjoys learning English very much, he plans to move him to another kients, however, don like the idea of ??learning a foreign language at such a young age. “The kids should have more time playing instead of learning,” says Wang Lichang, an engineer whose daughter is in the Chaoyang Art Kindergarten. Wang said children bear too many burdens due to their parents great expectations of them. According to Zhang Lan, the deputy principal of the experimental kindergarten at the Beijing Normal University, most parents send their children to the kindergarten not to master any special skills, but to gain basic knowledge that will be helpful in their future schooling. “English is just one of the many subjects we offer,” says Zhang. “We must adhere to our cardinal principles on teaching. One principal clearly defines the major funcning habits and moulding children characters – not merely instilling them with knowledge. “Zhang said it is theoretically possible for children above age four to start learning another language. She believes it will do no harm to their command of Chinese.” However, whether it is really applicable and worthwhile to teach children a foreign language so early remains a controversial topic in pre-school education, “Zhang said. We have not the first time I saw the robot in the prison, but South Korea seems to intend to give the robot more responsibility. Korean Ministry of Justice has announced that from March next year in the Pohang prison machine guards perform a one-month trial program, and is expected to cost about one billion won.
Professor in charge of this program is the visit of the Wall Street Journal said: “The machine guards is not the Terminator”. It is not like we imagine (and handsome shape, filled with mechanical sensitivity and super-power, etc.), this group of prison guards in fact, but more like a portable monitor, it is designed for use in the routine patrol work, and continuous monitoring of the prison all non-normal activity, and in the event of a situation, issue alerts and real-time image transfer to the control center, so that this group of guards (in this case humans) can quickly grasp the situation. In fact, this design of the robot orientation is “cordial” and “friendly”, so please do not imagine it handsome appearance, and make my heart ready to click on the reference source to see its true colors!
